Legally decreed radon testing at places of work throughout Finland
We perform radon testing required of operators according to section 45 of the Radiation Act 592/1991 and the ST12.1/ 2.2.2011 guidelines. (The legal requirement concerns places of work, public facilities, schools and preschools, hospitals, care homes, libraries, religious facilities as well as sports, club and other recreational facilities located in high-risk radon zones.Radon testing is always implemented as part of occupational health and safety).
Facilities where people work for a minimum of 20 hours per year (= approx. 6 min/day) must be tested. Radon testing is usually not required for places of work located on floors above the ground level. In such spaces, levels of radon are typically very low.
Operators throughout Finland are responsible for ensuring that the threshold values outlined in the guideline ST12.1 are not exceeded. For permanent places of work, the annual average threshold value is 400Bq/m³. Radon testing at places of work must be performed between 1 October and 30 April.
Operators in the following high-risk zones must assess their employees’ exposure to radon:
Asikkala, Askola, Enontekiö, Hamina, Hattula, Hausjärvi, Heinola, Hollola, Humppila, Hyvinkää, Hämeenlinna, Iitti, Imatra, Janakkala, Järvenpää, Kajaani, Kangasala, Kauniainen, Kitee, Kittilä, Kivijärvi, Kolari, Kotka, Kouvola, Kuhmoinen, Kärkölä, Lahti, Lapinjärvi, Lappeenranta, Lemi, Lempäälä, Loppi, Loviisa, Luhanka, Luumäki, Miehikkälä, Myrskylä, Mäntsälä, Nokia, Orimattila, Padasjoki, Parikkala, Pornainen, Porvoo, Pukkila, Pyhtää, Pälkäne, Riihimäki, Ruokolahti, Ruovesi, Savitaipale, Sodankylä, Taipalsaari, Tammela, Tampere, Tohmajärvi, Valkeakoski, Virolahti, Ylöjärvi.
