Legally decreed radon analyses for public facilities

Radon mittauspalvelu

We perform radon exposure testing legally required of operators based on section 45 of the Radiation Act (592/1991) and the ST12.1 guideline. The legal requirement concerns public facilities in the high-risk radon zones. Radon analyses are always implemented as part of occupational health and safety, and employees must always be notified of the exposure testing. We can also provide all relevant documentation approved by the Finnish authorities in case an operator is found exempt from the obligation to perform radon testing.

Levels of radon must be assessed in the cities and areas listed below. Radon testing is overseen by the Regional State Administrative Agencies, industrial safety administration and STUK. Test results must be valid at the time of quality audits. Radon exposure testing is an occupational health and safety measure, and test results remain valid for 10 years.

Operators in the following high-risk zones must assess their employees’ exposure to radon:

Asikkala, Askola, Enontekiö, Hamina, Hattula, Hausjärvi, Heinola, Hollola, Humppila, Hyvinkää, Hämeenlinna, Iitti, Imatra, Janakkala, Järvenpää, Kajaani, Kangasala, Kauniainen, Kitee, Kittilä, Kivijärvi, Kolari, Kotka, Kouvola, Kuhmoinen, Kärkölä, Lahti, Lapinjärvi, Lappeenranta, Lemi, Lempäälä, Loppi, Loviisa, Luhanka, Luumäki, Miehikkälä, Myrskylä, Mäntsälä, Nokia, Orimattila, Padasjoki, Parikkala, Pornainen, Porvoo, Pukkila, Pyhtää, Pälkäne, Riihimäki, Ruokolahti, Ruovesi, Savitaipale, Sodankylä, Taipalsaari, Tammela, Tampere, Tohmajärvi, Valkeakoski, Virolahti, Ylöjärvi

Radon gases are also present in ridge areas throughout Finland:

Facility users’ exposure to radon must be assessed in ridge areas and at places of work located in areas with highly permeable sand and gravel formations.

Radon testing must also be performed for all underground work facilities in permanent use.

Operators throughout Finland are responsible for ensuring that threshold values for radon exposure are not exceeded. For public facilities, the annual average threshold value is 400Bq/m³.
